IN PARTNERSHIP with the University of Wolverhampton, Burton College has launched two new degree level courses.
The BSc (Hons) in Construction Management and BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering are the first two courses, which are to be run in partnership with the university at the college's Abbey Road University Centre.
The introduction of these now means that the college can offer students and employers the opportunity to progress from a Level One qualification through to degree level in both Construction and Civil Engineering.
The BSc (Hons) Construction Management provides the skills required for a career as a construction professional involved in the estimating, planning, co-ordination, monitoring and control of either new-build or refurbishment projects.
Subjects studied include built environment economics and control, site surveying, construction technology, contractual procedures, estimating, environmental engineering and the conservation and preservation of buildings.
Legal issues relating to the built environment are also considered, as well as structural applications, construction management, facilities management, and project planning and control.
The BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering provides the educational base to become an incorporated engineer, exploring environmental engineering, hydraulics, land surveying, highway design and construction, structural analysis and design, computer-aided architectural design and geotechnics. In addition, structural and water engineering are also studied.
Talking about the new degrees, course leader Terry Shenton said: "These are the first qualifications to be offered in conjunction with the University of Wolverhampton at the College. We already have an established reputation for Construction and Civil Engineering within the local area and wider afield whilst the University of Wolverhampton is well-known for its expertise in these subjects, so the partnership is ideal.
"The country is facing significant skills shortages in both sectors and these degree courses will provide a high level of quality training, building on the strong links already forged with industry, to supply skilled and professional employees across the trades."
Both courses are available to study on a part-time basis over four years.
