BURTON College has defended its plans to change its name despite negative feedback.
A row has begun after Derby College objected to the Lichfield Street campus’ plans to expand its name to include South Derbyshire in its title.Representatives from Derby College have said changing the name to Burton and South Derbyshire College would cause ‘confusion’ between the two education establishments.
While Burton College bosses have said changing the name would ‘widen their demographic.’ Derby College has in excess of 1,800 students from the South Derbyshire area and works in connection with 152 companies in the area, compared with the 29 Burton College works with.
Brian Powell, head of Derby College’s governing body, slammed the proposals and said: “At this time of public sector restraint, a rebranding of this nature would be a total waste of public money.
“The status quo with Derby College and Burton College retaining their current names is the obvious choice with both colleges continuing to offer high quality education and training.
The Mail previously reported how Burton College is currently in the process of buying the lease of a 3,544sq m building in William Nadin Way, Swadlincote.
The college, which would train its construction, bricklaying, plumbing and engineering students in the new building, has applied to South Derbyshire District Council for a change of use.
