Comedians set to take over the town

Written byHELEN KREFT

A NEW promotions company is hoping to give its audiences a night to remember with a long list of comedians set to perform in Burton.

Events and promotions company Mercia Events Ltd is the brainchild of Ken Holmes and Debra Reiblein, who broke out of their full time education sector jobs to pursue a long standing dream.

The directors will focus mainly on music and comedy events and promotions at the Brewhouse. They are working with agents and artist management companies to find both established acts and those who are emerging with the aim of getting these to perform at various venues around the Midlands area.

Already the duo has lined up their first event under its Shires Comedy Night logo compered by Mike Belgrave, featuring Bob Mills who has a string of acclaimed television and radio credits.

Mr Holmes said: “I have wanted to do something like this for years. I did this on a much smaller scale years ago but I couldn’t really devote all my time to it because of my full time job.

“We both worked in education which isn’t very stable at the moment so we thought if we don’t do this now we will never do it.

“We set up in November but are launching now after speaking with various agents and now it is really taking off as we have comedians ringing us up asking we have anything happening in Burton soon.”

If comedy wasn’t enough, Mercia Events Ltd is also attracting the large amount of local bands Burton has to offer and, under its Live House brand will be showcasing its music events with Kitten Pyramid playing in the bar area of the Brewhouse, in Union Street, Burton, before its first comedy event.

Mr Holmes added: “Because we are so close to bigger cities, we have a constant stream of comedians passing through Burton who can come along.”

The Shires Comedy Night, which will also feature James Dowdeswell, and headliner Mike Gunn, will take place on Thursday, April 11, with Kitten Pyramid playing from 7pm, and the comedy starting at 8.15pm.

Tickets cost £12 and are available by phoning the Brewhouse on 01283 508100. Mercia Events is available by visiting www.merciaevents.com
