A NEW community group in Rolleston is calling for support from residents to fight what they have called ‘encroaching developments’ in the area.
Rolleston Village Community Group is urging members of the community to add their voices to a campaign against large numbers of homes which they believe could ruin the area and impact heavily on life in the village.
Those behind the group are calling for people to support the village’s neighbourhood plan, which has been compiled with the help of many residents and presents the vision which people have for the area in which they live.
Chairman Shaun Adams said: “We have produced the neighbourhood plan over the last two years and there is an awful lot of time and money which has gone into it. At no point has large-scale development been popular in the village.
“What we are trying to do is get everyone to support what has been done in the neighbourhood plan, and get everyone to understand we have got to get behind the village.”
Several big developments are in the pipeline in and around Rolleston at the moment, including plans for 100 homes on the fields of the former Forest of Needwood School, proposals for 300 homes on land between Knowles Hill and Anslow Lane and potential plans for more than 500 houses on land owned by Staffordshire County Council between Rolleston and Stretton. Recently approved developments in Outwoods and other sites could also impact on the village, many people believe.
“We’re not Nimbys. We’re not against development and we know it has to happen, but it’s got to be controlled, it’s got to be in the right place and it’s got to be good for the community,” Mr Adams added. “Where’s the traffic going to go from these developments? There’s no joined up thinking. We’ve got to look at what will be best for the community.
“The village has unanimously said in the neighbourhood plan they do not want any large scale development.”
Traffic is one of the main concerns for many people in the area, and there are also worries that these developments will erode the space between Rolleston and Burton.
