Cooks handed gong for their food

SCHOOL cooks are celebrating after scooping an award recognising their fresh and healthy meals.

Leicestershire County Council’s school food service has received a bronze ‘food for life’ award from the Soil Association for the second year in a row.

The chartermark is only given to caterers who serve seasonal menus which are low in fat, use free-range eggs only, don’t include GM ingredients and have high animal welfare standards.

Byron Rhodes, the council’s cabinet member for school food, said: “We serve pupils tasty, healthy and freshly-prepared dishes and I’m pleased that our high standards have been recognised by an independent organisation.

“A nutritious meal at lunch offers real health benefits and we’re encouraging more young people to make the switch from pack-ups.”

Menus change twice a year and include chicken jambalaya with herby potato wedges and broccoli florets, roast loin of pork with stuffing and rich gravy, roast potatoes, glazed roast parsnips and green beans, vegetarian toad in the hole, winter berry and apple crumble with custard, plus fruit and yoghurt which is served daily.
