Council hits back after horse meat scandal accusations

Written byRICH GUTTRIDGE

STAFFORDSHIRE County Council has hit back at claims local authorities are to blame for the horse meat scandal.

Councils up and down the country were slammed by the boss of supermarket chain Iceland, who accused councils of ‘driving down’ the standard of food, and awarding contracts on the basis of price alone.

Malcolm Walker said that food being provided by local authorities was the ‘invisible’ side of the catering industry, and that supermarkets had bore the brunt of the blame as they were in the public eye.

The comments came just days after beef was taken off the menu in Staffordshire schools.

In response to Mr Walker’s comments, Mark Winnington, cabinet member for the environment said: “We are committed to driving up standards and providing nutritious value-for-money meals for all our children.

“It is our policy that where possible, we source meat and other products from Staffordshire suppliers.”
