Court for sword carrying drunk

Written byBY HELEN KREFT

A 39-YEAR-OLD man will be sentenced after admitting carrying a samurai sword to ‘keep people away from him’.

Gennaro Buoniconti, of Branston Road, Burton, appeared at Burton Magistrates’ Court yesterday to admit possession of an offensive weapon, namely a seven-inch sword.

The court heard that police approached the defendant after hearing a report of a man on CCTV carrying a 7in sword in High Street, Burton, on December 7, at 5.45am.

Emma Thompson, prosecuting, said: “He was not seen threatening anyone and the area was not busy at that time.

“When police approached, the defendant stuck the sword in a flowerbed. He put down the cans of beer on the floor, when asked by police and ‘in drink’.”

Buoniconti was arrested and in interview told police he had been drinking cider the night before and suffers from anxiety. He had some issues so went for a walk, adding that he wanted to have the sword with him to keep people away, but told officers he knows it was wrong. The court also heard he was getting help with drink issues.

The case was adjourned for a pre sentence report and he will return on January 23.

He answers conditional bail not to enter the town centre between 8pm and 8am.
