A HOUSEBOUND father of three has turned his life around after losing six-and-a-half stone and quitting smoking.
Just over six months ago, Craig Spencer, of Swadlincote Road, Woodville, smoked, was on medication, walked with the aid of a stick and weighed in at more than 25 stone.
Now, the 40-year-old charity volunteer goes to the gym regularly, swims between four and five miles a week and has given up smoking.
Craig was motivated to turn his life around because he could no longer walk properly which was stopping him from spending time with his children.
His lifestyle turnaround started in March when he was referred by his GP to the Derbyshire Healthy Lifestyle Hub, a dedicated health and weight loss programme run by Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust, South Derbyshire District Council and Active Nation at Green Bank Leisure Centre in Swadlincote.
Craig said: “I feel like a new man. I want to thank everyone who has helped me get this far.
“The support of the stop smoking team and healthy lifestyle advisors has really changed my life.
“At first I didn’t think gyms were for people like me. I feel so much better and the encouragement from others has been great.”
Martyn Shore, healthy lifestyle adviser from Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust, said: “Craig is an absolute inspiration.
“With our help he has managed to figure out a plan for losing weight through changing some of his eating habits and increasing his exercise levels.”
Inspired by his weight loss success, Craig also sought help from the Derbyshire County Stop Smoking Service and successfully gave up smoking 15 weeks ago.
Carol Wynn, specialist stop smoking advisor, said: “Craig is uplifting and an example to us all. We are delighted to have supported him to make healthy choices in changing his life.”
