THE eyes of the footballing world will descend on Burton tomorrow as the draw for a prestigious football tournament arrives in the town.
Stars of the future and dignitaries from across Europe will head to Burton Town Hall for a live draw to see who will play who in the UEFA Women’s European Under 17 Championship Finals later this year.
This will be followed by a civic dinner before Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium hosts to several tournament games, including one involving England and one of the semi finals, in November and December.
Bernard Peters, deputy leader for service commissioning for East Staffordshire Borough Council, said the town hosting the tournament will help it ‘build on an Olympic legacy that began with the torch relay through Burton’.
He told the Mail: “The fact that we will not only be hosting games but also the cup draw and civic dinner is a massive feather in the cap for Burton and East Staffordshire.
“The tournament will hopefully allow us to continue trying to promote our Olympic legacy and get a generation of young girls interested in playing and watching football.”
The eight national squads, who are set to take part, will be based at St George’s Park.
This is the seventh UEFA European Women’s Under 17 final tournament but the first to be held outside Switzerland and the first to contain eight teams.
