Police have named the man as 72-year-old Patrick Kenny, who died when his bike and a dark blue BMW collided on the southbound carriageway at Claymills.

Neighbours today paid tribute to the married fatherof- three, who they described as a ‘nice guy’ who was well known for his cycling achievements.

Friend Charlie Larkin said Mr Kenny was 'known to everyone’ and that, in 1980, he broke the Land’s End to John O’Groats record in a time of two days, 10 hours and 30 minutes. He also held many other longdistance cycling records.

He also held a trike record for two years and was trying to reach a target of completing one million miles through pedal power.

Internet tributes have also been left to the cyclist of Spring Lane, Whittington, on the 'Timetrialling' forum.

One, from a man only known as Neil, reads: “72 years young, and still knocking out min 400 miles weeks ..

even in the snow.

“He was due to have been in Tunsia on Wednesday just gone for his winter miles, but the holiday was cancelled.

“He had just gone over 901,000 recorded miles, and easily would have made the million. A real nice bloke.”

Another states: “We can't believe it.

Pat has put so much into cycling, which he loved. He timed our successful one-way 25-mile record in the Midlands in 1990.

“A lovely man with so many successful records himself. We will miss him as will so many others. RIP Pat.”

Another tribute, from a poster known only as Paul, said: “A very sad loss to cycling, I only knew Pat from my involvement in record-breaking attempts where he always acted as a time keeper, a lovely man who was always ready to help out My sincere condolences to all Pat's family and friends.”

Police said a 44-year-old arrested in connection with the tragedy on Friday afternoon had been released on bail.

A spokesman said: “We are appealing for any witnesses who saw the collision or either the cyclist or the BMW prior to the incident.”

Anyone with information is asked to telephone PC 5112 Richard Davis or Sergeant 4616 Nigel Roberts at Staffordshire Police on 0300 123 4455.
