Demolition plan for hotel and pub

Written byBY HELEN KREFT

A HOTEL and pub could be bulldozed to make way for 26 rented homes and flats, new plans have revealed.

The Gardens Hotel, in Ferry Street, Stapenhill, is also home to The Gardens Hotel Bowls Club which is to be relocated to Stapenhill Football Club and will supply the club with electricity and water.

Ian Reynolds, of Maplevale Developments Ltd, has applied to East Staffordshire Borough Council for permission to demolish the building and its bowls green and build two blocks of four terraced home, three blocks of three terraced homes and one block of nine apartments, all managed by Trent & Dove Housing Association.

In total it will include 17 two-bedroom houses, and nine apartments with one bedroom each.

Each house will have one car parking space each, and a garden.

Mr Reynolds, in his submission to the council, said: “It is submitted that a high density development is appropriate in this location having regard to its sustainable credentials. Apartments generally have a much smaller floor area than a conventional house.

“The proposed development will secure a significant contribution towards meeting the affordable housing requirements of East Staffordshire Borough.”

The Gardens Hotel Bowls Club has been located in the grounds of the hotel for a number of years, but is ‘undersized and of a poor condition’.

Plans also say that although the bowling club has some small sheds alongside the green its does not have a water or electricity supply. Furthermore, the green can only be accessed through the hotel. If the hotel was to close the club would lose access to its green.

Mr Reynolds added: “As the public house has declined, its facilities have become increasingly inadequate for the bowling club.”

The bowls club, in a letter to the council, says it fully welcomes its relocation to the football club site, in Maple Grove, adding that it believed there would be an increase in membership to the football club.
