Drink-driver left facing 'isolation' in her home

Written byRICH GUTTRIDGE

A 63-YEAR-OLD woman disqualified from the roads after being caught more than twice the legal drink-drive limit will be left ‘isolated’ in her own home, a court has heard.

Susan Degville was banned from driving for two years after she was found two have 216 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood when she was stopped by police. The legal limit is 80 milligrammes.

At Burton Magistrates’ Court, her solicitor raised concerns that Degville would be stranded where she lives in Wychnor, claiming she struggled to access public transport, as well as suffering with breathing difficulties and various other ailments.

Mark Moore, defending, outlined the circumstances which led to Degville deciding to drive home on March 3.

The court heard she had driven to Burton to see a band play at a pub, but the day took a turn for the worse when she slipped and injured her hip.

After being advised to drive home by someone she was with, Mr Moore said she was in two minds whether to go to hospital or get in her car.

But shortly after deciding to head for home in Wychnor Park, she was stopped by the police and arrested.

Mr Moore told the court: “My client is a 63-year-old who has never been in any kind of trouble at all, and her clean licence bears testimony to the fact there are no driving issues.

“She lives alone in a fairly isolated location where there is no access to public transport.

“Her hip gave way and she fell to the floor and hit her head. The person she met helped her and suggested she get in her car and go home.

“Had my client been thinking straight she would not have got into the vehicle. She was half thinking she should get into her car and half thinking she should go to the hospital.

“The consequences are quite substantial and she is going to end up in a very sad and sorry situation. This is a 63-year-old woman who is going to find herself isolated where she lives.”

Degville pleaded guilty to drink-driving and was disqualified for 24 months. She was also fined £425.
