East Midlands MEP hits out over Cyprus banking crisis

Written byMARK MCKAY

THE Euro MP for Swadlincote and Ashby has accused EU leaders of breaking promises and robbing Cypriots, at an economic policy debate.

Roger Helmer, UKIP MEP for the East Midlands made the comments after it appears increasingly likely that EU member states will have to launch a fiscal rescue package for Cyprus.

Mr Helmer, accused Herman Von Rumpur, European Council president, and Jose Barroso, commission president, of breaking the rule of law and vital property rights.

He said: “Now it’s Cyprus. You talk of a Europe of values, with the rule of law and property rights.

“Yet you planned to confiscate the funds of savers and pensioners, while protecting senior bondholders.

“You have presided over unemployment, and hardship, and poverty, and misery, in Southern Europe, on a scale we have not seen in my lifetime.

“You have no answers to the problems of Europe.”
