ANOTHER popular Burton pub that has been a fixture of the town’s nightlife for decades looks set for a new future as a gift shop.
The Pepper Tree, formerly The Union, in Union Street, Burton, has been sold by former owner Marston’s.
Plans have now been submitted to change the use of the building to a new retail outlet called The Alphabet Gift Shop, selling specialist and individual gifts for all occasions.
According to documents submitted with the plans, it will also include a coffee snack bar selling ‘beverages, including wine and bottled beers, as well as light hot and cold snacks’.
The applicant currently owns The Alphabet Gift Shop in Station Road, Mickleover, that has proved a success in its five years of trading.
The new store would create a minimum of four full-time and four part-time jobs, as well as an anticipated two temporary positions for over the festive period.
The Pepper Tree reopened back in 2011 after being refurbished under a new licensee and managed by James Reid.
However, like so many other pubs across the region, including The Punchbowl in Stapenhill, it was decided by the brewery owners to sell the pub off.
