FRESH life is set to be breathed into a once-popular South Derbyshire pub.
The Shoulder of Mutton, in Walton-on-Trent, was bought by couple Mark and Sarah Smith last year.
But rather than take over the reins of the running of the pub, the pair instead decided that they wanted to convert the once-popular watering hole into their new home, having been on the look-out for a bigger place.
Many residents were sad to see the demise of the pub, which closed its doors in 2011, leading to fears locally that it could be converted into an off-licence.
Despite no longer being used as a pub, the couple always maintained their determination to keep the building looking largely the same, insisting preserving its heritage was important to them, with plans to carry out minor works at the pub now submitted to South Derbyshire District Council.
People in the area are said to be satisfied that despite the pub’s closure, the building will at least remain.
A planning report provided to the council on behalf of the applicants said: “The layout of the property remains as is. The objective of the design is to improve the existing building, maintain the existing character, but providing a modern living space.”
