Family turmoil led to man hurling tiles from his roof
AN enraged husband climbed onto the roof of his home and threw concrete roof tiles to the ground because he believed his wife was having an affair with his brother, a court has heard.
Police were called to the address in Victoria Street, Burton, on January 28.
When they arrived they found householder Mohammed Aqib, 42, on the flat roof of the property, hurling roof tiles to the ground.
Aqib admitted a charge of using threatening behaviour towards Ghousia Shabnam, as well as PC David Daniels and Sergeant Tyrone Kerr of Burton police, when he appeared at Burton Magistrates’ Court.
Andrew Bodger, prosecuting, said: “Police attended Victoria Street, Burton.
“There they found the defendant standing on a first-floor flat roof throwing roof tiles at the ground.”
He said Ghousia Shabnam, Aqib’s niece, was in the rear garden of the house when she looked up and saw him climbing out of the window of the first-floor bedroom.
She said he was shouting in Punjabi at his brother for having an affair with his wife.
Mr Bodger said: “She was terrified one of the tiles was going to hit her.” When the police arrived, there were at least two or three roof tiles on the floor, each measuring half a metre by a quarter of a metre.
In a subsequent police interview, Aqib told officers he had been in his bedroom on the day of the incident and had seen his brother and nephew in the garden of the property, throwing stones at the house.
Mr Bodger said: “He said he was trapped in the bedroom by his family because they didn’t want trouble, so he climbed out the window.”
Aqib told police he was just trying to frighten his brother.
“He accepted he had two tins of beer,” Mr Bodger said.
“He said he wasn’t drunk at the time.” Robin Skinner, defending, said: “All the people involved in this incident are family.
“There are a lot of family problems.” The case was adjourned until tomorrow for the preparation of pre-sentence reports.
Aqib was bailed until then with the condition that he has no contact with a list of named individuals.
