Forecasters: more rain will add to our misery

Written byMARK MCKAY

FORECASTERS have warned heavy rain falling on already sodden ground over the next 24 hours could cause problems in Burton and East Staffordshire.

The Met Office was unable to predict the amount of rain which could fall, but said it expected it to be heavy.

The region has been pummelled by downpours and cursed with miserable weather since late December.

The Environment Agency also issued a flood alert for the River Trent after its levels rose. The alert remains in place for low-lying areas and roads between Kings Bromley and Clay Mills.

A spokesman from the Met Office told the Mail: “There is a band of rain moving through which will stay with Burton through the morning (Thursday).

“It’s going to be heavy rain, so any rainfall could have the potential to cause issues.

“The ground is already sodden and waterlogged, so even an average amount of rain could still cause issues.”
