Former Albion star denies rape

A FORMER Burton Albion player raped a single mother he met in a nightclub because he felt ‘entitled to’, a court heard.

Defender Patrick Ada, 27, ignored his 25-year-old victim’s tears as he sexually assaulted her, prosecutors alleged.

Ada had seen the woman at the club in London’s Mayfair and met up with her again the following night at the home she shared with her eight-year-old daughter and a friend.

While at the house, Woolwich Crown Court was told, Cameroon-born Ada and the trainee solicitor drank vodka before he allegedly raped her.

Ada (pictured) was arrested the next day while training with the Albion squad at the National Football Centre in Rangemore.

Peter Clement, prosecuting, told the jury the offence was ‘borne out of presumption and belief by Ada that the woman wanted to have sex with him’.

Mr Clement added: “The presumption, the prosecution suggests, was borne out of nothing more than arrogance, not a man misreading a situation and not a man that simply made an error of judgement.

“It was a man who, having been invited by a lady to what ought to have been the safety and security of her own home, presumed he was going to have sex with her, regardless of her wishes, regardless of her tears or regardless of her obvious refusal. He forced her.”

Mr Clement said Ada told police any sex was consensual, adding: “He later told police even before he arrived he presumed he would be having sex with her.

“He said, as a professional footballer, he knew her type: a single mum who wanted to grab a footballer.

“He told police she believed through him she would have a better and perhaps more glamorous life, whether in Burton-on-Trent or elsewhere.”

Ada, a former Scottish Premier League player now living in Barking, East London, claimed the rape complaint against him was false and malicious, aimed at wrecking his career as a footballer.

But the woman told the jury: “He started saying ‘I’ve made a lot of sacrifices to come and see you, I’ve come a long way’.

“I was pushing and saying ‘No! Please stop!’ But he kept doing it. I was crying a lot.”

Ada, now playing for Conference team Ebbsfleet United, allegedly committed the offence on March 1. He denies one count of rape.

Ada signed with the Brewers in February, but made a disastrous debut when he was sent off 20 minutes into his first match for the club against Cheltenham Town.
