Freezing temperatures to hit in next 24 hours

Written byMARK MCKAY

BURTON residents have been warned to get their thermals ready as frost and freezing temperatures are expected to hit the town in the next 24 hours.

Mercury levels are forecast to plummet tonight and tomorrow before warmer weather arrives on Friday.

Motorists have also been urged to take care on the roads after the Met Office released a ‘yellow’ warning for ice throughout Staffordshire.

A spokesman from the Met Office told the Mail the temperature is unlikely to rise above about 4C until Friday.

The spokesman said: “We have a weather front passing through and another will come in on Friday.

“But in the lull colder air is dropping down from the north east which is the reason we are having the slight drop in temperatures.”

The spokesman said the temperatures in Burton would hover between 2C and 3C during tomorrow daytime.

This is predicted to rise to about 7C by Friday.

The spokesman said “By Friday, another weather system will have come across from the Atlantic.

“This will bring a band of rain so it is looking fairly unsettled for the weekend.”

Burton and South Derbyshire has endured weeks of heavy rain since before Christmas.

The Environment Agency has released a flood alert for the River Trent as a result of persistent rain.

It is feared low-lying land and roads between Kings Bromley and Clay Mills could flood as well as the river’s tributaries near Newton Solney.

It also predicted for heavy showers and miserable weather to continue to hang over the region even when the freezing weather subsides.

The Met Office spokesman added more heavy showers could hit Burton during today and tomorrow.

The spokesman said: “These will become more patchy on Friday.”

Yesterday the River Trent’s flowed at about 1.3 metres following freak weather over the weekend.

Thunder, lightening, torrential rain and hail pummelled the town on Saturday causing damage to more than 30 Branston homes.
