Gym bites the dust

Written byADRIAN JENKINS

A WOMEN’S gym with more than 200 members has closed – run out of town by the harsh economic climate.

Felines, in Moor Street, Burton, closed its doors for the final time on Friday after racking up liabilities estimated to run into five figures.

Two full-time staff have lost their jobs and the parent company, Felines Ltd, is expected to be liquidated shortly.

Owner Michele Elizabeth, who stands to lose almost £50,000 – including a start-up investment of £25,000 – blamed the economic climate.

“When January, normally our best trading month, was hit by bad weather, plus two break-ins and declining member support, it was the final straw.”

She said members who paid by direct debit, the majority, would not lose their March payments.

However, she admitted the ‘small minority’ who had paid for annual membership would lose out.

“The members have a vision I fleeced the club – but I really didn’t,” said Miss Elisabeth.

“I have not made a penny and I don’t feel I warrant the backlash I may get.”

The owner said attempts had been made to find cheaper and more spacious accommodation since last summer but had come to nothing.

It was also no longer an option to remain in Moor Street, she explained.
