Head teacher wants residents and parents to meet to resolve parking issue

Written byMATTHEW COBB

THE Head teacher of Pennine Way Junior Academy in Church Gresley has said he is hoping to arrange a meeting so that the ongoing parking issue around the school can be addressed.

Richard Mansfield said that the situation will only be resolved if parents, local residents and the police get together to discuss the best way to keep all parties happy.

People living on Pennine Way expressed their frustration at the Safer South Derbyshire meeting on Tuesday night (February 4), saying that they often have their driveways obstructed while parents drop off and collect their children from the school.

They are asking for parents to be more considerate to people living in the area but think that a solution can be reached if both sides are willing to get together and discuss what can be done.

Mr. Mansfield is also keen to point out that since the opening of Church Gresley Infant and Nursery School, the number of parents parking during opening and closing hours has doubled, creating further problems for both the school and residents.

He said: “We are trying to work hard with local people and the council to see if we can find a solution. We’re trying to encourage more of our children to walk or cycle to school.

“In May we’re running a cycling scheme, but we also need to make sure that the cycle paths around the school are safe before we can take it any further.

“I’m trying to arrange a meeting at the academy for all people concerned to attend.”

There were also complaints from some residents that they have received verbal abuse from parents collecting children from the school when asked to move their cars, which they raised to the police.

Mr. Mansfield said: “I have had reports of this happening and it’s unacceptable. We do put out mail to our parents and this has been raised. Unfortunately there are a small minority who do not take any notice.”
