Hero who saved family from fire 'would do same again'

Written byBY HELEN KREFT

A 24-YEAR-OLD man who helped rescue a family from a burning flat has said he would do the same again.

Iain McConnachie and his friend, Tom Williams, also 24, had stopped for food at The Bulls Head, in High Street, Repton, on their way to Tamworth, when they managed to rescue Molly Godfrey, her mother and her three young children from her flat opposite the pub last week.

Mr McConnachie, said: “We first knew about it when someone ran into the pub shouting for someone to dial 999. Tom and I went outside to see and saw black smoke coming from the top of the flat.

“There were two women and three children at the window shouting they couldn’t get out because there was so much smoke.

“I gave Tom a leg up onto the chip shop sign (next door) and he got onto the windowsill. Someone else came over with a ladder and I got on it, and Tom handed me two of the youngest children. The two women and the oldest child then managed to get down by themselves. It all happened quite quickly. Tom was really quick thinking. He was passing down the children and I was quite nervous about carrying them as I didn’t want to drop them. I would definitely do what I did again. I think most people in that situation would have done the same.
