High street woe as Blockbuster goes into administration

Written byBY JAMES BRINDLE

ANOTHER major town centre retailer&8217;s future is hanging in the balance after DVD rental chain Blockbuster plunged into administration.

Having already seen HMV, Jessops and Comet go into administration, Burton could now lose Blockbuster in Orchard Street, after it announced it was making the desperate move putting the future of its 4,190 staff across the UK at risk.

Deloitte, the accountancy firm which will now take over running the business, said Blockbuster would keep trading while it tries to find a buyer.

The Orchard Street store was under threat anyway in the near future as a result of the proposed Burton Shopping Park on the site of Peel Croft.

However, it is another blow to the town&8217;s retail offer following on so quickly from the news of HMV&8217;s demise earlier this week.
