Hilda and Pete celebrate 60 'magic' years

Written byLAURA HAMMOND

AFTER 60 years of marriage, Hilda and Peter Pearson say they love each other more now than they did on the day they married.

The romantic pair, of Tudor Way, Newhall, said they had been through their ‘ups and downs’ over the years, but their diamond wedding, tomorrow, will mark six decades of ‘magic’.

Though their failing health may have stopped them ballroom dancing and enjoying some of the ‘good times’ they have had during their marriage, the couple said they would not change each other for the world.

“I love him more now than when we got married. The love grows stronger, said Mrs Pearson, 79.

“We’ve always been happy and we have always loved each other. We made a vow when we married and we have kept it. We have enjoyed life,” she added.

The couple met when they were coal picking in Church Gresley, and married when they were still teenagers.

Mr Pearson said they chose the day before Valentine’s Day as ‘we wanted it to be about me and Hilda, not everyone else’.

He worked down the mine for most of his life, until it closed, and was eventually forced to retire because of ill-health. Mrs Pearson took on a number of roles throughout her life to make sure the family had enough to get by.

Working hard, and working together has kept them together for all these years, they said.

They now live with their son Howard and daughter-in-law, Anita, and have two grandchildren, Joshua and Bethany.

In their spare time, Mr Pearson, who used to be a keen footballer and volunteer with poorly children, enjoys watching television and his wife enjoys a game of bingo.

“We have a happy life,” Mr Pearson, 78, told the Mail. “I would marry Hilda again if we came back in a second life. It’s been magic.”

Mrs Pearson agreed, adding: “When the good Lord takes us, I shall find him again.”

She does not expect that to be for some time, however, as she said she ‘fully expects’ them both to reach 90. “I’ll mother him,” she added.

The duo are expecting a surprise to help them celebrate their anniversary, as their family will not tell them what they have planned.
