TRAFFIC on the A38 was brought to a standstill by runaway horses.
The route was closed in both directions between Clay Mills and Branston on Sunday night as police tried to safely move the horses, thought to have escaped from a nearby field, from the road.
Motorists were kept waiting for more than an hour after the road was closed shortly after 10pm.
Kev Ramsall, from Stretton, who was one of the motorists stuck at the scene, said: “I was at the front of the queue. I saw three horses, they were all over the road. Cars started slowing down and I wondered what had happened. Most cars had turned off but police had already closed the road when I got there.
“There was a roadblock in place and the police tried to direct the horses up a slip road into a horse box.”
