How to keep your home safe from festive raiders

Written byHELEN KREFT

A CHRISTMAS burglary campaign is to be seen on buses in a bid to protect people from thieves in Ashby and Measham.

Police genericLeicestershire Police will be supporting National Burglary Week by launching a month-long bus advertising campaign.

With just three weeks until Christmas, the campaign is focusing on protecting people from burglars who target homes filled with gifts over the festive season. It’s part of the force wide burglary campaign called Operation Dynamo.

In Leicestershire, burglaries are at a 13- year low. However, there is a trend for an increase in burglaries around the Christmas period, so it is important that people take simple precautions to protect themselves and their belongings.

With lots of people using public transport during the month of December the force has placed 350 interior bus panels on Arriva, First Bus, Paul James Coaches and Roberts Coaches across Leicester and Leicestershire. They will be on the buses throughout December reminding people to keep their property and belongings safe.

Detective Chief Inspector Rich Ward said: “We know that the average bus journey is about 20 minutes and that people have time to read the interior panels as they are travelling so we thought it was a good way to deliver some crime prevention advice across in the run up to Christmas.

“The poster reminds people to take some simple steps to keep their home and presents safe at a time when we can see an increase in burglaries.”

Assistant Chief Constable Paul Broadbent said: “Burglary can mean much more to victims than the loss of possessions.

It can leave them feeling scared, violated and vulnerable. If items are not insured, it can also lead to financial as well as emotional strain.

“A burglary over the Christmas period can almost certainly ruin the holiday.

“The police service has worked hard to tackle burglary and this is evident in the recorded crime figures, which show another six per cent fall in burglary in June 2012.

“This year we want to make sure people are aware that the most effective way to prevent becoming a victim of burglary is simple – secure your property properly and remove all high value items from view.”
