I'll knock Barry back into shape, says fitness guru

A FITNESS guru has offered a helping hand to a 30-stone father who was declared “too fat to work”.

Joseph Spendlove, founder of Slim Brother, read Barry Fowers’ story in the Burton Mail and he jumped at the chance to help out.

Mr Fowers, of Field Avenue, Hatton, suffers from heart problems, diabetes and irritable bowel syndrome. He has been told by doctors that he is unfit to work because of his huge size.

Mr Spendlove is offering his services free of charge for three months in order to help Mr Fowers get back into shape.

After hearing he would be receiving the help from Slim Brother, the overweight dad of one was delighted.

“I’m very pleased,” he said. “This is just the type of help I was hoping to get – one way or the other.

“My sister has been trying to get me to see Joseph for a while now, but it’s great to be able to meet him and get started on fixing my weight.

“Today we just started off by sorting out my diet plan and looking at what I’m eating. I’m seeing Joseph again tomorrow when we’ll be looking at what exercise I should be doing.”
He has been set an ambitious plan to lose one stone a month – in the hope of halving his weight by summer 2012.

Mr Spendlove, also of Hatton, appeared on Channel Four’s Big Breakfast in 2001 during his own battle against obesity. He said: “I can totally relate to his position because I used to weigh 31 stone.

“Just by speaking to him today you can tell that he is motivated to lose the weight. I am 100 per cent confident that by cutting out the toxins and processed foods in his diet the weight will drop off him.”
The weight guru will be visiting Mr Fowers’ house twice a week, as well going walking and food shopping with him.

Mr Fowers also hit out over comments about his employment situation, saying: “I took this voluntary redundancy so I could sort this problem out.

“But after six months, I was told my benefits would be reduced to £21.65 a week — and I’ve worked every day since I was 16 years old. I just want a fair shake of the stick so I can have enough time to sort my weight out.”
He added that he wouldn’t consider having a gastric bypass because of his heart problems, and that he is “scared I won’t wake up from the anaesthetic.”
