A NURSERY in South Derbyshire, previously rated as ‘good’ by Ofsted inspectors now ‘requires improvement’.

Little Jack Horner’s Day Nursery In Etwall was rated as good in 2011 but an inspection earlier this month had found that improvements needed to be made.

The 11-page report focused on a number of areas such as learning and play, with the inspector making a number of positive comments.

The report stated that although most staff interacted appropriately with children, some staff in the pre-school were not always fully active in making activities really exciting to add to children’s learning.

The inspector found that although children received attentive support from staff, teaching did not always challenge them enough to make the most of the activities.

Inspector Janice Hughes said: “While staff regularly talk to children about what they are doing, too often these conversations do not fully encourage children to think and talk about the learning process, or to explore ideas and make links to their experiences. As a result, there are inconsistencies in teaching skills and, consequently, some teaching is ineffective.

“The management team has identified weaknesses in the consistency of practice between staff. This is being addressed by implementing a training package for all staff.”

The report summarised that the school was not yet ‘good’ becausestaff did not always clearly identify next steps for learning, to enable them to provide older and more capable children with sufficient challenge and excitement to maximise learning.

It said: “The quality of the teaching and the assessment of children’s learning is inconsistent and, as a result, children’s progress is variable.”

Manager of the nursery Julie Oakton did not wish to comment on the outcome of the inspection.

Educational establishments are marked as either outstanding, good, requires improvements or inadequate.
