Jailhouse block as Elvis is locked up for stealing Lego
A HEROIN addict and persistent offender has been jailed for six months for stealing Lego worth £25 while drunk.
Elvis Morris, 34, of Short Street, Stapenhill, appeared at Burton Magistrates’ Court and admitted a charge of theft on January 30 — while already serving a suspended sentence.
The court was told Morris and accomplice Keith Thompson stole a combined £55 of Lego from Argos in Station Street — a £25 box and a £30 box respectively.
The court heard the pair had been drinking, but were unable to give any reason why they chose to steal the children’s building bricks.
The bizarre theft has landed Morris a 24- week stint in prison, as he was in breach of a suspended sentence, as well as owing the court more than £1,700 in fines and court costs.
Emma Thompson, prosecuting, said: “Morris was arrested shortly after, and he had both boxes in a bag he was carrying.
“He made full and frank admissions in interview.
“He said he had been drinking and they had decided to go and commit the offences together.”
The court heard a member of staff at Argos recognised Thompson, and the thieves were arrested a short time later.
Sonia Lawrence, defending, said: “He knows the difficulty he faces in virtue of this offence.
“He has started to replace heroin with alcohol, which is not uncommon.”
Dressed in a black jacket, blue jeans and white trainers, Morris smiled while he was being led away into custody.
Thompson, of Huntingdon Road, Stapenhill, was handed a 12-month conditional discharge.
The 30-year-old had previously served time in prison for being involved with the supply of heroin, the court heard.
He was also told to pay £85 in court costs.
Robin Skinner, defending Thompson, told the court: “He said ‘Yes, I did it’.
“He does not have a clue why he did it.
“He was drunk at the time with the co-defendant.”
