Leaflet blunder mixes Branston with Swadlincote

Written byROB SMYTH

HOMEOWNERS in a Burton suburb were left dumbfounded after receiving a leaflet filled with vital facts about health services – that were all located in Derbyshire.

Residents in several streets across Branston could not believe their eyes after the ‘How to Choose Well’ leaflet dropped through their letterboxes.

The glossy leaflet contained information on the ‘nearest’ health centres for people in the area – which were listed as Swadlincote, Derby and even as far afield as Ashbourne.

The ‘local health guide’ has been designed and distributed by the Southern Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) which, on its website, states that it ‘acts on behalf of more than 500,000 patients covering Southern Derbyshire’.

Health chiefs apologised for the mistake, but urged people that have received the leaflet to read it as it still contains ‘relevant’ medical information.

A spokesman for the clinical commissioning group explained to the Mail the reasons behind the mix-up.

He said: “We apologise for the confusion that has been caused by health guides being delivered to postcodes outside the NHS Southern Derbyshire CCG area.

“It’s always difficult when mailing to local populations, as Royal Mail postcode areas, NHS organisations and geographical boundaries do not match.

“We therefore have to make the best fit we can.

“We have chosen the most cost-effective way of distributing to households in Southern Derbyshire – and most of the information, for example self-care and the use of NHS 111, is still relevant to people outside the area.

“Also, we know that some patients who live outside of Southern Derbyshire boundaries do access and visit services within the area.”

The guide was created for all residents within the CCG’s catchment area, which includes South Derbyshire, to provide ‘information and advice on what local services are available, when and how to use them’.

It has been delivered to homes across the area and is also available to download online.
