Privilege to celebrate our youngsters

THROUGH your pages I would like to say how privileged I was to attend the Derbyshire Young Achievers Awards.

Hearing the outstanding stories of these incredible young people was as inspirational as they were heartwarming.

It was certainly a special night for South Derbyshire, with winners from Hilton, Church Gresley, Swadlincote, Etwall, Coton-in-the-Elms and Melbourne.

There were examples of youngsters achieving extraordinary things in the face of adversity, sporting successes and much more besides. Everyone nominated on the night should be very proud of their accomplishments.

Special mention should also go to the 1211 (Swadlincote and District) Squadron ATC, which was recognised for the work it does to raise money for charity.

These young men and women do amazing work in our local communities.

The reason for writing is because young people, on occasions, can get the blame when something goes wrong. However, the vast majority work hard and show outstanding courage, talent and kindness, as these awards exemplify.

Well done once again to all of South Derbyshire’s young achievers and thanks to everyone who nominated them.
