Tougher penalties are the only solution

AS a wheelchair user I sympathise with Peter Edwards over the misuse of disabled parking spaces.

Unfortunately, the agencies involved have very little legal power to enforce parking regulations.

The company that controls parking at Morrisons is quick to issue invoices for breaching parking restrictions but is unable to tackle misuse of disabled parking as this would involve a parking warden and not be reliant on CCTV.

Morrisons has no legal power to make motorists who abuse the system move their vehicles and neither of them have the power to confiscate blue badges that are being misused.

Councillor Pat Murray says he will tackle the problem by making motorists aware of the situation. I'm afraid this follows the same line as speed limits — motorists are aware of them but choose to ignore them.

Until tougher penalties are introduced and enforced then the problem will not go away.
