MEP slams plans to charge motorway use

Written byBY MARK MCKAY

THE Euro MP for Burton has slammed plans which would see motorists charged to use motorways.

West Midland MEP Mike Nattrass said cash strapped motorists would give ministers a rough ride if they introduce an annual charge to use motorways and trunk roads.

The Government is considering the move in a bid to reform vehicle excise duty.

Under the plans the duty would become a two tier system in which motorists pay a lower tax to use minor roads.

Motorists would then pay a second charge to use trunk roads and motorways.

Mr Nattrass, who is also a member of the EU transport committee, said: “The Government’s reforms are clearly on an anti-motorist course which is simply about squeezing more money out of road users.

“Encouraging more motorists to use minor roads will be damaging to the environment.

“More traffic would be forced onto slower, more congested roads in our villages, towns and city centres.
