MP asks for disclosure of A38 work delay reasons

Written byROB SMYTH

BURTON’S MP is calling on highway chiefs to publish the exact details of three objector’s complaints which have seen a ‘vital’ A38 safety scheme ground to a halt.

Andrew Griffiths revealed that he had written to the Highways Agency in a bid to get them to disclose the full reasons why the £140,000 lifesaving project was stalled as a result of just three people opposing the otherwise universally backed scheme.

The Mail previously revealed the trio complained that they would incur increases in time and cost as a result of changes that have included the permanent closure of central reservation gaps and would have seen a reduced limit of 60mph between Branston and Barton under Needwood introduced this month, thus seeing the scheme halted until the matter is resolved.

Mr Griffiths said: “I think it is only fair that everyone who has supported and campaigned for these changes understands why these three people are holding up the project.

“This is why I have written to the Highways Agency in a bid to get them to publish the exact reasons why the project has stalled.

“I am not looking to persecute these people and I do not want their names and addresses in the public domain, but I would like to see, in their own words, why they object to what many others think is a vital scheme.”

Only days ago, the Mail revealed that Mr Griffiths was pushing for crisis talks with Secretary of Transport Patrick McLoughlin in a bid to get the objections thrown out to let the work begin.

Highways chiefs had already brought the work forward from March to January due to ‘public safety’ concerns.

Mr Griffiths alongside the Mail and a host of other agencies launched a bid to improve safety along the A38 following the death of two sisters in 2012.

He added: “A lot of people worked hard to get these much needed changes put into place.

“It is simple. These changes will save lives and will have a massive impact on the lives of drivers who regularly use the A38.

“This is the time when we need to make sure that the needs of the many are more important that the needs of a select few people.”
