MP backs campaigners in road safety dispute

Written byRICH GUTTRIDGE

AN MP has waded into a row over a proposed road scheme in Ashby which has been met with fierce objection from people in the town.

Andrew Bridgen, MP for North West Leicestershire, said plans to narrow Market Street should be put out to consultation again due to the widespread opposition from residents.

The work, due to begin next month, will aim to make the road safer, but campaigners argue it will not improve the situation and could drive shoppers away.

Mr Bridgen said: “There is a feeling in the town these measures are being imposed on people against their will and without adequate consultation.”
