A POLITICAL big hitter will be best man for Burton’s MP when he gets married later this month.
Andrew Griffiths revealed that Eric Pickles, secretary of state for communities and local government, and one of his close friends would double up at the ceremony on Saturday, September 28 when he weds Burton-born girlfriend Kate Kniveton in the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft in the Houses of Parliament.
The MP told the Mail that with only weeks away, the pair ‘can’t wait’ for the big day.
He said: “The plans are all coming together and before we know it the big day will be here.
“I can now announce that Eric Pickles and a friend of mine called Tim will be my best men at the event, bringing together my personal and political life.”
Mr Griffiths got to know Mr Pickles when he worked as his chief of staff when he was Conservative Party chairman.
Mr Griffiths added: “Even though we are having the wedding in London, it will have a great Burton feel.
“Kate’s dress is from Staffordshire, the bridesmaids’ dresses are from Rolleston, the table decorations are from Anslow, among several other items that are from the area.
“We have people coming to the wedding from as far afield as Washington DC and Dallas in America, and former town MP Sir Ivan Lawrence will also be attending
“We are both looking forward to sharing the happiest day of our life with everyone and the wedding will be a great way to start our future life together.”
They first met in 2006 when Mr Griffiths was named as Burton’s parliamentary candidate for the Tories in the run-up to the 2010 election.
The pair hit it off straight away and after courting for a number of years, they became engaged earlier this year.
Miss Kniveton, whose parents live in Anslow, said: “I am a Burton girl and have been all my life, and when Andrew proposed it was one of the happiest days of my life so far.”
