A MAN from Burton had to be airlifted to hospital after tripping over his dog and falling over 40ft.
The 42-year-old, of Winshill, sustained multiple injuries after the fall while walking his dog near Birchover in Derbyshire.
The Derby Mountain Rescue Team was called in after the man had been at the top of a rocky outcrop, known as the Lord’s Seat, when he tripped over his dog and fell over the edge.
He fell more than 40ft to the rocky ground below and hit two ledges on the way down.
He sustained injuries to his back, neck, shoulder and face and was initially treated on scene by a paramedic from the Derbyshire Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.
Mountain Rescue was called due to the location of the casualty and the difficult terrain that had to be crossed to reach the helicopter.
Sixteen members from the Derby team attended the incident on Saturday morning, and placed the man in a vacuum body splint.
They then carried him using a specialised rescue stretcher, protected by a rope system, down to the waiting air ambulance for transport to the Royal Derby Hospital.
A spokesman for the Derby Mountain Rescue Team said: “We can confirm that the man in question was conscious when we arrived at the scene.
“We, however, did not know the full extent of his injuries and with that kind of fall the situation could have been potentially fatal.
The 37-year-old man became stranded on a rock spire in an area of crag known as Jacob’s Ladder, in Dovedale.
After a five-hour rescue operation, he was finally removed to safety and taken to hospital for assessment and treatment.
