Market consultants have pocketed £39,000 in fees

A COUNCIL has paid a project management company more than £39,000 towards the cost of refurbishing Burton’s Market Hall.

East Staffordshire Borough Council has revealed to the Mail that it has paid Quarterbridge Project Management Ltd £39,500 to give ‘design, architecture, engineering and disability expertise’ on the refurbishment of the Market Hall.

This is 2.5 per cent of the authority’s budget for the project from a total of £1.54 million to regenerate the indoor market by turning it into a daytime shopping hub housing food retailers, and a music, cinema and entertainment venue at night. There will also be restaurants outside in place of the soon-to-be demolished brick built fruit and vegetables stalls.

The remaining stalls inside the market are now preparing to move to their temporary home on the first floor of The Octagon Shopping Centre

Councillor David Leese, the council’s deputy leader for partnerships, said: “The Market Hall refurbishment is an integral part of the council’s vision to improve the market and the town centre. We are showing our commitment by investing more than £1.5 million on its refurbishment.

“Due to the significance of the project we felt it was important to obtain external expertise to help deliver the refurbishment. Following a competitive tender exercise, Quarterbridge was identified as the ideal consultants to deliver on this project. Their expertise and knowledge of delivering successful market refurbishment projects is second to none. By investing only 2.5 per cent of the project’s budget, the council is able to resource design, architecture, engineering and disability expertise which the council doesn’t have, to ensure a successful market refurbishment.”
