Market one of the worst in Midlands - trader claims

Written byHELEN KREFT

AN outdoor market trader with 40-years experience in the industry has jacked in his Saturday trading day calling controversial plans ‘an assassination of Burton’s heritage’.

Steve Dilks, moved his lingerie and underwear stall from the Market Place to Station Street last November with the rest of the outdoor traders but is now trading on Thursdays due to ‘appalling trade’ and the negative influence of some youths.

He said: “I have left on Saturdays due to the appalling trade and the negative influence of groups of youths who hang around from lunchtime.

”There was a time when Burton Market was one of the top markets in the Midlands - its now possibly the worst. It has been neglected managerially for many years but this final carve up is just about the last nail in the coffin.

”I have kept out of it so far but I am so fed up with what I am seeing. I think its time that the views of stallholders, businesses in the market, and the public were put forward.

”All we are seeing are pages of spin from the council who is having to cover its backs over this assassination of Burton’s heritage.”

A spokesman for East Staffordshire Borough Council said: “With respect to the “negative influence” of the youth congregation, we are in discussion with our policing colleagues to eliminate any potential problems that may arise - as we would with any area in the borough.

“The authority would like to point out that Mr Dilks was a founder of the Market Management Committee, yet regularly failed to attend which brought about the end of this committee.

“Mr Dilks has expressed in the past that the decline of the market has been down to the recession and the decline in local industry.

“As for market being one of the worst markets in the Midlands, the authority disagrees with this, as can be demonstrated by the prosperous outdoor market, and the planned renovation of the indoor market hall.”
