Members query council finances

Written byRICH GUTTRIDGE

MEMBERS of a Burton parish council demanded a review into its finances amid accusations of illegal activity, it has been revealed.

An official request for an independent audit into the finances at Anglesey Parish Council was served to senior members at the end of last year after being signed by four members of the council.

But the revolt from within the council failed to succeed after one of the signatories, Andrew Woodhead, agreed to back down, claiming that he had been ‘pressurised’ into signing the document.

The Mail was last month ejected from the parish council meeting where the proposal was discussed, as the council claimed the topics were of a confidential nature. The matter has now come to light following the publication of the meeting’s minutes.

Another member who signed the document, and also voted for the Mail’s reporter to remain present at the meeting, has since resigned from the parish council.

Matters due to be discussed at December’s meeting, outlined in the council’s agenda, included ‘accusations relating to finance’ and ‘a request by councillors asking the chairman to act illegally’.

During the meeting accusations were aired against senior members of the council during a grievance hearing.

Following the change of heart form Councillor Woodhead it was resolved following a vote that there would be no independent audit into the council’s finances and payroll arrangements.

The minutes of the meeting on December 6 read: “Since signing the letter on November 19, 2012, Councillor Woodhead confirmed that he did not realise what he was being pressurised into signing.

“It was resolved and agreed that no further independent audit of the council’s finances for the current financial year be carried out.”

It is the latest revelation to emerge from the parish council which has undergone a significant overhaul in recent months, following the resignation of six members, and has seen members embroiled in a series of in-house squabbles.
