Written byROB SMYTH

THE body of a man who sparked a nationwide search after disappearing has been found.

Donald Balding was first reported missing on Monday, December 3, after vanishing from his home in High Street, Measham.

A friend who was concerned for his welfare contacted Leicestershire Police who began working with forces across the UK in an attempt to trace Mr Balding (pictured).

Despite several sightings, the trail had gone cold until the force were contacted by their counterparts in Derbyshire on Saturday, after a body, believed to be that of Mr Balding, was found at a factory unit in the Long Eaton area.

The body has now been formally identified as Mr Balding.

His death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is now being prepared for the coroner.

It was believed that there was a sighting of Mr Balding at the Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, on Monday, December 10, and he had been known to visit caravan parks in Lincolnshire, Devon and Cornwall.

A spokesman for Leicestershire Police said: “The body of missing man, Donald Balding, has been found in the Derbyshire area.

“The body was found at a factory unit in the Long Eaton area and has now been formally identified as Mr Balding.

“He was reported missing to police in December after a lack of contact with a friend.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious.”

Sergeant Gavin Drummond, from the county’s missing persons team, said: “We carryied out extensive inquiries to establish Mr Balding’s whereabouts and issued a number of appeals.”

Anyone who has any information about Mr Balding’s whereabouts during the time he was missing is asked to contact police on 101.
