A MOTHER and son subjected a woman to a vicious attack in a Burton town centre store, a court has heard.

Ann-Marie Shand, 44, and son Terry Shand, 20, both of Cherry Tree Road, in Stapenhill, punched and kicked Margaret Hopper following an altercation in Primark, in Coopers Square shopping centre, leaving the victim with swelling on her face, a black eye and scratches to her forehead.

Burton Magistrates’ Court was told that Terry Shand punched Ms Hopper, the grandmother of his child, with such force that it knocked her to the ground.

The pair admitted assault at Burton Magistrates’ Court and are now awaiting sentencing.

The incident happened on January 18 and began after Mrs Shand claimed that she didn’t like the way Ms Hopper had looked at her after which the pair became embroiled in a verbal slanging match before Mr Shand took matters into his own hands.

After Mr Shand threw the punch Mrs Shand weighed in as the stricken Ms Hopper lay on the floor, also punching her as well as kicking her and pulling her hair.

Moira Bell, prosecuting, said: “The incident happened in full view of staff and customers in that shop. The two began arguing with Mrs Shand becoming agitated, and as the argument continued it was at this point that it is alleged the male defendant hit the left side of her face and knocked her off her feet. As this happened Mrs Shand started kicking her as she was lying on the floor.

“She (Mrs Shand) said that she had been struck in the chest, but admitted that it wasn’t a punch. She now accepts she should have walked away and said she was ashamed of what she did.”

The store’s security staff were forced to intervene, while a paramedic was required to attend to Mrs Hopper following the attack.

Mrs Shand is due to be sentenced by Burton magistrates on March 15, while Mr Shand is to face a Newton hearing on May 28 before his fate is decided.
