Motorists face traffic delays due to roadworks

Written byROB SMYTH

DRIVERS heading into Burton will face traffic delays during the next few days as a result of ‘vital’ work being undertaken by utility firms.

Motorists travelling into the town were met with long queues of traffic yesterday at opposite ends of Burton.

Long tailbacks stretched the length of Shobnall Road and Stapenhill Road as a result of temporary signals.

However, council chiefs have vowed that both sets of traffic lights will be removed and all work completed by the end of Thursday at the latest.

A spokesman for Staffordshire County Council, who oversee the roads network in the town, told the Mail: “I have checked with our network management team.

“Both sets of lights are temporary signals put in place by workers for utilities companies and they will be off by Thursday, November 7.”

Temporary traffic lights have been in place at all of the sites, causing tailbacks, particularly at rush hour.

Councillor Simon Tagg, cabinet support member for transport, told the Mail: “Road improvement works are carefully co-ordinated in order to cause the least amount of disruption as possible.

“Unfortunately there will always be some degree of disruption and we would ask people to bear with us while this is carried out.

“However we need to make sure our road network is maintained to the highest standard; which we know is a priority for people and businesses.”

This comes just weeks after roadworks that caused misery for road users in and around the town.

It is also the second time in the space of two months that major disruption has befallen drivers who along Shobnall Road.

Last week motorists also faced long delays due to work in Hawkins Lane being carried out by Western Power Distribution.

Over the river in South Derbyshire, it was revealed that Derbyshire County Council will be undertaking road improvement works.

The road will be closed from November 11 to November 22.
