Name and shame police site reaches milestone

Written byBY ROB SMYTH

A SYSTEM that leaves criminals in Staffordshire with nowhere to hide by publishing their photos online has celebrated its second anniversary.

Staffordshire Police’s Behind Bars initiative has been a significant success with details of 580 offenders published since it started in 2010.

Behind Bars promotes the outcomes of certain cases in which offenders aged 18 and over are sentenced at Stafford Crown Court to at least six months in prison or a young offenders institution.

The web page has received more than 68,000 unique visitors, which equals to an average of 186 every day.

Superintendent Adrian Bloor, head of justice services for Staffordshire Police, said: “Behind Bars allows people to see the photos and offence details of people who have been sent to prison, as well as where they are from and where they committed their crimes.

“We’re confident that Behind Bars reassures people that the criminal justice services in Staffordshire are working hard, and dealing with those who commit crimes in our communities.”

Among the people named and shamed from Burton included murderer Tomasz Sobczak, rapist Roy Mewis and Carl Burns, of Short Street, Stapenhill, who stole £10,000 worth of class and jewellery from GC Hardwick and Sons in High Street.
