New crime figures show a dramatic drop in burglaries

Written byROB SMYTH

NEW figures have revealed a dramatic reduction in burglaries in Burton and South Derbyshire.

Latest statistics from the Crime Survey for England and Wales showed that both areas had seen a seven per cent drop in the amount of burglaries — better than the national average of a six per cent reduction compared to figures from 2011.

The survey also showed that there had been a one per cent fall in burglaries in Leicestershire.

Chief Constable of Staffordshire Mike Cunningham said: “This is a real tribute to the hard work of staff, partners and the very many members of the public who have the confidence to support us either by reporting crime or providing other information which has helped us to deal with criminals.

“Staffordshire is getting safer over the longer term.” Police and Criminal Justice Minister Damian Green said: “This dramatic fall in burglary is very welcome. This and other reductions in crime are evidence that police reform is working.

“Our police forces are rising to the challenge and cutting crime even in a difficult financial time. We need effective policing to cut crime.

“New police and crime commissioners are about to take on the role of holding police forces to account to ensure crimes like burglary continue to fall right across the country.”

This comes after it was recently revealed that all three areas had also witnessed dramatic falls in the amount of rural crime.

Staffordshire Police recorded drops in all types of crime except for drug offences, with an overall figure which was below the national average of 36.68 per cent.

Derbyshire Police also fared well with final figures below the national average but, like counterparts in Staffordshire, it saw a rise in the number of incidents linked with drugs.

Leicestershire Police revealed that in rural areas of the county robberies and other theft offences were on the up.
