New homes plan met with anger from village

Written bySARAH BOULD

PEOPLE living in a South Derbyshire village voiced anger at a meeting about plans to build 100 new homes.

Etwall Parish Council held the meeting on Monday night and invited villagers to have their say on the outline planning application by Bloor Homes and the Sir John Port Charity.

The proposed development, off Willington Road, includes up to 100 new homes and relocation of the cricket pitch.

Around 150 residents attended the meeting to discuss traffic, sewage, medical facilities and schools.

Resident Mick Guest said one of the primary concerns was the basic access to the site, and the application was dismissive of the traffic problems that would occur as a result of the development.

He told representatives, acting on behalf of the applicant: “Your answer to that problem was totally inadequate. It is very dangerous and you have put it back to Derbyshire County Council for a scheme you will partly fund.

“Until there’s an answer, we feel you should not be given planning permission to build. We will have to put up with the problems and that’s unacceptable.”

Resident Darren Thompson told the meeting that his garden had flooded several times and more houses could make the problem worse because the sewage system would not be able to cope.

Richard Wayne, speaking on behalf of the landowner, said: “The proposal we put forward at the moment is that we will provide a first-class cricket facility and it will have a longer lease.”

Etwall Parish Council chairman Karen Cresswell asked if the development would go ahead if residents said they did not want new cricket facilities?

Mr Wayne said: “If you decide to object on that basis, then it is up to South Derbyshire District Council to make that decision on what has been submitted.

“We are looking at the longevity of cricket club.”

His comments were met with laughter.

The parish council will put forward an objection to South Derbyshire District Council based on the comments voiced at the meeting.
