TRAFFIC chaos looks set to engulf parts of Burton as major road repairs see 24-hour street closures – a plan drivers fear could gridlock the town.
Residents and businesses have been contacted by Staffordshire County Council over work which is set to take place on Wetmore Road and Bridge Street from Tuesday, April 2.
The project will include replacing damaged kerbs and resurfacing the carriageway throughout the one-way route.
The resurfacing will involve the use of phased 24-hour road closures over a period of 17 days, which will take place between 7.30am and 6.30pm including weekends.
In a letter to people affected by the scheme, highways bosses said: “Staffordshire County Council will shortly be carrying out major improvement works along Wetmore Road and Bridge Street as we start work on a £245,000 investment in the area.
“The scheme will include the replacing of any damaged kerbs and the resurfacing of the carriageway.
“The carriageway resurfacing element will be undertaken with the use of a series of phased road closure over a period of 17 days, to enable the works to be completed safely.
“Each phase will continue to be closed 24 hours a day for the period stated and works will be continuous from 7.30am until 6.30pm, including weekends.
“A signed diversion route will be in place for each phased closure, along with designated personnel at either end of the closure points to offer advice.
“Access to properties along the length of the scheme will be maintained throughout theworks.
“Unfortunately with any major highway works, some disturbance is unavoidable, and there may be short delays.”
Diversion routes will be in place for the entirety of the works, which will begin on April 2 and are set to last five weeks.
Temporary lane closures will be in used between 9am to 3pm from Tuesday, April 2 to Tuesday, April 16.
The one-system part of Wetmore Road from Horninglow Street to Severn Drive will be closed completely from Wednesday, April 17 to Saturday, April 20.
The one-system part of Wetmore Road from Severn Drive to Burton Bridge will be closed from Sunday, April 21 to Thursday, April 25.
Bridge Street from Burton Bridge to the High Street and Horninglow Street crossroads will be closed from Friday, April 26 to Tuesday, April 30.
The Horninglow Street and High Street crossroads will be closed from Wednesday, May 1 to Friday, May 3.
