Online advice over frozen pipes

Written byBY HELEN KREFT

SEVERN Trent Water is offering free tips and advice to those suffering from frozen or burst pipes and how to prepare homes and businesses for the cold weather.

The service has released the information through its website, in a bid to reduce the amount of callouts across South Derbyshire.

Rick Newton, a member of Severn Trent with 18 years experience of fixing leaks in the cold weather in the county, said: “When water freezes within a pipe it expands, putting more pressure on the pipes and joints. This often causes pipes to split or joints to pull apart.

“People may not realise that Severn Trent Water is only responsible for the pipes in the street and footpath up to the boundary of a customer’s property.

“But the information on the website tells you exactly what you need to do to sort out problems, including how to find your stop tap, which is essential for damage limitation in an emergency.

“There is also a really useful video showing you what you can do if you do have frozen pipes.”

Severn Trent will also be publishing a list of plumbers on its site if problems occur.

Anyone looking for the information should visit www.stwater.co.uk/snow and a list of plumbers is available by visiting www.stwater.co.uk/find-a-plumber
