A PETROL price war looks set to erupt with cuts of up to 2p a litre expected at supermarket filling stations across Burton and South Derbyshire.

Tesco, off St Peter’s Bridge, revealed to the Mail that it was set to drop prices of petrol and diesel after rivals Asda cut 2p off prices yesterday.

Morrisons, which has forecourts in Wellington Road, Burton, and Sir Herbert Wragg Way, Swadlincote, said that it was set to bring down prices ‘at most sites’ and Sainsbury’s, in Civic Way, Swadlincote, pledged to remain ‘competitive’.

The cuts were welcomed by the RAC and the AA as the public looks set to see finances tighten ahead of the Christmas period.

Pete Williams, the RAC’s head of external affairs, said: “Now more than ever, motorists are struggling to make ends meet on a daily basis due to the cost of running a car, so every reduction in price at the pump makes a big difference.

“Current analysis of wholesale prices indicates there is still scope for retailers to pass on reductions of at least 5p a litre in petrol and 2p a litre in diesel over the next two weeks.”

In Burton, the cheapest unleaded is currently available at Shell St Peter’s Bridge, costing 137.9p a litre, with the cheapest diesel available at MRH Burton, in Ashby Road, costing 137.9p.

In South Derbyshire, diesel currently costs 138.9p a litre at Sainsbury’s in Swadlincote.

Unleaded costs 134.9p and is also available at Sainsbury’s.

Nationally, unleaded costs an average of 138.16p and diesel 142.71p.
