A TALENTED nine-year-old pianist and composer from Burton has become the first person from Britain to be invited to perform at one of the world’s most prestigious children’s concerts.
Sophie Stevenson, who attends the Burton Yamaha Music School, will perform at the highly prestigious 42nd International Junior Original Concert of the Yamaha Music Foundation in Japan.
She is one of only two piano soloists to receive the invitation after her original composition ‘Haunted House’ was selected from more than 35,000 pieces entered from throughout the world.
She performed the piece on solo piano at the European Junior Original Concert held in Venice in February this year and following a subsequent tape audition received an official invitation to represent Europe in the International concert taking place at the Bunkamura Orchard Hall, in Japan on October 12.
Sophie said: “I feel truly honoured to be the first Brit to ever perform at the international concert and to be representing Europe.
“I appreciate the opportunity the Yamaha Music Foundation has given me and have been practicing very hard so as not to hit any wrong notes.
“I just can’t wait to experience the Japanese culture, meet new friends among the other musicians and be able to play my own composition on a Yamaha Concert Grand Piano.”
